Hunter/Trapper Education

Picture of HTE ClassHunter - Trapper Education Program
Since 1959 Pennsylvania has conducted formal hunter education courses. The results of nearly four decades of training have been exceptional. With more than 1,700,000 students certified to date, statistics showing hunting fatalities and injuries from firearms have declined nearly 80%. Similar results are being reported across the country. Hunter education is working, and working well! Hunter education – it's fun, it's effective, and it's waiting for you. Give it a try!

What's the purpose of Hunter-Trapper Education? Live fire training

The program is designed to produce safe, responsible and knowledgeable hunters and trappers. Hunter education is rooted in concepts of firearm safety, but has grown to include important training in ethical behavior and showing respect for others and the resource. The program provides instruction in basic techniques plus a host of hunting, trapping and outdoor skills all designed to enhance a new participant's knowledge and enjoyment of wildlife and our hunting and trapping heritage.

Who needs Hunter-Trapper Education?

Pennsylvania 's Game and Wildlife Code requires all first-time hunters and trappers, regardless of age, to attend and successfully complete the training. Participants must be at least 11 years of age to enroll in a course. (You must be 12 years old before you may begin to hunt.) There is no maximum age for enrollment. Parents are encouraged to attend the course with their children. Many states also require a certificate of hunter safety training before issuing a license. Experienced adults are again taking the course prior to hunting in another state/province or simply as refresher training.

2007 Classes

There will be two hunter-trapper education classes offered at the Juniata Co. Sportsmen’s Club in 2007.  Classes will be held at the clubhouse located off PA Rt 333 halfway between Port Royal and Mifflin.  You must attend all three classes in the session, be on time, and pass a written test to complete the course.  There is no charge for the course.  On-line pre-registration is required—no walk-ins will be accepted.  Please bring a bag lunch and drink on Saturday.  Class size is limited. Registration can be completed by going to www.pgc.state.pa.us. Click on the hunter education calendar on the right-hand side of the page and go to the month  you are interested in.  Click on the class of interest, then on the Register Now button, complete the information and submit it.  Telephone registration will only be accepted by Scott Partner at 436-9245 for those people who do not have access to a computer.
